We recently visited the St. Leon Wind Farm and enjoyed taking some closeup pictures. The site is currently under construction while they add some additional 1.65 Megawatt Wind Turbines to the existing wind farm consisting of 63 Vestas V82 Wind Turbines with a total capacity of 99 Megawatts. The arctic model is in use to accommodate Manitoba’s winter climate. The turbines stand 80 metres tall, with a rotor diameter of 82 metres. Each turbine assembly weighs approximately 220 tonnes.
St. Leon Wind Farm is located approximately 150 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg in the town of St. Leon Manitoba. It was the first of its kind in the Province of Manitoba and one of the largest wind energy developments in Canada.
A single wind turbine-generator can generate up to 1.65 MW of power, with maximum capacity produced when wind speeds reach ten metres per second. The turbines start generating at a minimum wind speed of three metres per second, always turning at 14.4 rpm.
A 99 MW wind farm is capable of powering approximately 41,000 homes.
